Who we are
SREE GLUG is a GNU/Linux User's Group at Sreenidhi Institute of Science and Technology (SNIST), Hyderabad. We are a community of students, teachers and technical people who believe in Free Software — software that respects your freedom to run, study, share and improve it.
We learn GNU/Linux together. We install distributions, break and fix systems, write code, discuss standards, and share what we learn. We organise workshops, talks, install fests, hackathons and study groups. Everything we do is open: anyone can join, anyone can contribute.
Our philosophy
Free Software is not a business model — it is a set of freedoms:
- The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose.
- The freedom to study how the program works, and change it.
- The freedom to redistribute copies.
- The freedom to distribute your modified versions.
A GLUG exists so these ideas are practised, not just preached. When we install Debian or Fedora on a friend's laptop, when we read the kernel source instead of guessing, when we publish our notes so the next person can learn faster — that is the Free Software spirit at work.
What we do
Workshops and install fests. Talks on GNU/Linux, open standards, DevOps, cybersecurity and AI. Hackathons and contributor sessions. Study groups that read real documentation. And a lot of informal evening debugging sessions.
Our history
SREE GLUG was founded at SNIST in 2006, guided by Dr. Sreedhar Potla, and was among the earliest GLUGs associated with an engineering college in the region. The group ran GNU/Linux and Free Software activities until around 2014, when it became inactive — as communities sometimes do.
In 2025 the group was revived with a new generation of contributors, and activities resumed with the same Free Software spirit.
Our community
SREE GLUG is its members: students, alumni, faculty and friends of Free Software. We keep it small enough that everyone can participate, and open enough that no one needs permission to start something.
Our collaborators
The revived SREE GLUG works with Swecha Telangana, the Free Software community of Telangana, and participates in the Free Software Movement of India (FSMI) ecosystem — the network of Free Software groups and movements across India.
Our vision
A campus where students reach for GNU/Linux first, read source code, publish what they learn, and treat software freedom as a normal part of engineering — not a niche.
